Mai Manó's Gallery of
the Emperor's and the King's court photographer at 20 Nagymező utca
in Budapest
Designed by the
architects, Nay and Strausz. Implemented by József
Hann.
The gallery was built in 1893-94. The neorenaissance facade is covered with green-yellow enameld Zsolnay-majolic. Above, there are two Zsolnay pyrogranite statues. The facade facing the terrace of the third floor is embellished by frescos painted on ceramic plates. (There are a palette, a camera, and a chemist's vial in the hands of the female figures, allegorically respresenting painting and photography. The hallway of the gallery is decorated with cement-plaster stuccos. The painting on the ceiling is by Albert Raudnitz, a Viennese paiter. The monogram of Mai Manó is engraved into the wrought iron ornament of the half floor's handrails; one can spot the same monogram in the decorative spindles of the burnt glass windows. Those entering the staircase are greeted by the caption Salve hidden in the terazzo flooring. The late salon has four painted glass windows by Miksa Róth.
